A "Crash Course" in Romanian Currency
or
Romanian Currency for Dummies...
Romanian currency is LEU (singular) LEI (plural). Beginning March 1st 2005, the
so called (not cold...) "new" or "heavy" LEU currency is expected to be introduced and gradually replace the current LEU ("lei
vechi"=LV). A simple "rule of thumb" is to slash four zeros from the old currency ("lei vechi"=LV) to find out it's equivalent in
new currency ("lei noi"=Ln or "lei grei").
How to (easily) convert - actually approximate - LEI noi (or LEI grei = Ln) in €
(EUROs) or $ (USDs):
€1 = approx Ln3.6 ("lei noi" or "lei grei" = Ln for short)
$1 = approx Ln2.7 ("lei noi" or "lei grei" = Ln for short)
LG10 = approx. €2.8 or approx. $3.7 (USD)
LG100 = approx. €28 or approx. $37 (USD)
LG1000 = approx. €280 or approx. $370 (USD)
Every Ln10 (Romanian "lei noi") is approx.
€2.8 (EUROS) or approx. $3.7 USD
Every Ln100 (Romanian "lei noi") is approx. €28 (EUROS) or approx. $37 USD
Every Ln1000 (Romanian "lei noi") is approx. €280 (EUROS) or approx. $370USD
and so on...
EXAMPLE: A double room rate of Ln218 = approx. 2 x Ln100 + 2 x Ln20 (pardon my math but you have to cover a few tips...):
- in EUROS: 2 x €28 + 2 x €2.8 = €56 + €5.6 = approx. €61.6
- in USD: 2 x $37 + 2 x $3.7 = $74 + $7.4 = approx. $81.4
